Personally I have no connection to the dance form of Jazz as it stands. I have never performed it but I have seen dance performances on numerous occasions. I’ve seen it when I've watched pantomimes, dance competitions in Jamaica and just watching Dance moms on television. Moving here to Chicago I have noticed that jazz is a very big deal out here. The city is drowning in dozens on dozens of little jazz clubs that are packed with vibrant, energetic people ready to have a good time. Jazz is an old dance form that originated from the Africans when they were being transported as slaves to the Americans. The dance came as a complementary accent to the music of Jazz in New Orleans in the 1900’s. Jazz is a very energetic and strong dance form and has a lot of strong technical movements. It stretches the body but it's always a lot of fun and performers usually show a lot of attitude. It's and easy dance for to “get into charter” to. Jazz started becoming popular in Chicago in the early twentieth century. Jazz dance companies started breaking out over the city and started becoming a trend. Companies such as Andy’s, Joseph Holmes Dance Theater and Hungry Brain. The basic Jazz dance costume is bright, colorful and slightly revealing. Modern Jazz event would usually now have dancers wearing a leotard and some form of accent piece to go with it. The age group for performances varies but its more prominent with people under the age of 17. Modern contemporary Jazz dance performances today uses pop music to dance to Jazz. Back in the day it was strictly Jazz music to Jazz dances. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxgTidnhtIo Jazz dance events are happening all the time all over the city of Chicago.
